Social Determinants of Loneliness in Brazilian Men Who Have Sex with Men
In plain language
We asked 1,196 Brazilian men who have sex with men how lonely they felt. More than half reported moderate or high loneliness. Men facing money problems or problematic substance use tended to feel lonelier. Being in a relationship, feeling part of a community and having LGBTQIA+ people in one's social circle went along with less loneliness. HIV status made no clear difference once the other factors were taken into account. The main message is that loneliness follows living conditions and social ties, so reducing it means looking at material security and community support, not only at individual feelings.
